As project managers for a Dallas digital marketing and web development company, one of our functions here is to breakdown product requirements and translating them into a clear project plan. The trouble with this task occurs when requirements come in all different shapes and sizes and stages, some more difficult to understand than others. Since delivering clear product requirements saves time and money for our clients, we wanted to offer this quick list of best practices.
1. You want to create a central reference point for you and the project team, so we are working from the same list of requirements. Keep your requirement list organized by assigning a number to each requirement
I've been building websites since 1999 and I love sharing my knowledge. Specifically as it relates to UI/UX design and development, hopefully through our blog I can publish articles that will contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of high-level web development and marketing.
2. Group similar items. When creating your numbered list of requirements, group similar items together perhaps using categories or a sitemap to create a logical and organized hierarchy.
3. Include screenshots and mock-ups whenever possible. Visual aids are key to helping the project team understand your vision.
4. Explain the interactions. Fully explain the user experience of each requirement – using visual aids or flow charts as needed – if you have buttons, links or other interactive components on your list.
5. Provide detail. The more detail you can provide up-front, the more time and money you will save.
